Spotlight on…ProP’s Owner/Operator, Cher!

Have a gander and get to know our very own Cher!

1.  Tell us about your family…

I’m married to John!  We’ve been married 13 years.

I have two children from my first marriage.  Melanie is 24.  She has given me my first grandchild, Mackenzie Ann, (Ann is named after me). She lives in AR, where I hope to move soon, one day, soon, I hope!

Trey is 22, single (FYI, ladies!) He works at a bank and moving his way up the ranks.  He had a motorcycle accident in September ’08 and is still recovering from that.  Both my children are fabulous, great, well behaved and I’m so proud of them!

2.  What’s your favorite non-photography hobby/activity?

Is there such a thing?  Well let’s see. I like to travel, I do that a lot.  I love my computer, I love to shop LOL  I love spoiling my new grand baby!

3. Procrastinator or prompt with everything?

The biggest procrastinator around!  I work better under pressure and doing things last minute. If I do it early, I could possibly screw it up!

4. Neat or messy?

I’m neat of course LOL  Really? I’m messy, very unorganized, in the worst way.  I need to really consider paying someone to organize me.

If I showed you my office right now, you’d run!

5. Morning or night person?

Both, actually! I love getting up in the morning, having my coffee and catching up on my email!  But it’s night time that I get more active, i.e. Doing things I should of done all day…..must be the procrastinator in me ;)

6. Favorite smell?
Fresh cut grass.  Horses.  My granddaughter after her bath.  Armani Diamonds.  Coffee.  Bread baking.

7. Camera brand?
Canon, all the way!

8. Do you have a pet?

Yes, Charlie! He is a mixed mut, knee high, white/goldish.  Very fury, very good doggy! We’ve had him since April 2003, we rescued him from the shelter in Port Charlotte, FL!

9. Favorite and/or most inspirational photographer?

WOW, You’re trying to get me in trouble here, remember, I own a Photographers’ forum? LOL  I have a few, but in reality, every active photographer on the forum is my favorite.  I love their passion, their work, their willingness to succeed, their never give up attitude.  They’re all amazing people!

10. What got you started with photography and when did you start?

I started when I was 23/24. Got my first real camera from my dad on my birthday.  Since then, I’ve always had a camera.  So in reality, my dad got me started.
I think I still have that camera too.

Look for our next post with a few of Cher’s own images…

In The Spotlight with Sarah Ulrich!!

Business name: Uniquely You Photography

City & State: Lincoln, Nebraska

What’s in your camera bag right now?  Canon 5D & 5D II, 24-105L, 50L, 85L, 135L, 50mm 1.4, 35mm 1.4, several 4GB cards and other various accessories

Do you have a favorite subject to shoot? I love newborns, but I also love that 6-9 month stage, and also 2-3 year olds.

When you are processing your images, do you use actions?  I only have a few that I have purchased, but most of them are ones that I have made on my own.  I see a lot of actions that I like on other people’s images, but they never seem to look right on my own. I always use my own black and white that I have shared on ProPhotogs before.

If so, what are your favorite ones, give us about 4 or 5 of them, that you use mostly?
Leah Profancik’s (MiaBella) color action
Lilyblue actions

What would be the perfect photo op for you? I love when my clients trust me completely and give me full creative control.  I always look forward to those sessions…of course…it’d be fun to photograph a celebrity too! :)

Who or what, inspires you?  I know this will probably sound cheesy, but music inspires me a ton.  I am constantly listening to something.  It’s just a ‘feel good’ thing for me…when I feel good, it shows in my work and relationships with my clients, etc.  Also, obviously, other photographers (mainly those whose styles and subject matter are entirely different than mine; forces me to see in a different light), my girls, and my clients.

Some of my faves that have a far different “style” than my own:

What is one thing you really want to capture with your camera that you haven’t already? In college I came across a book in the library of a photographer that documented the life (and eventually death) of a man with HIV/AIDS.  I remember being totally captivated by the images and the story.  I think about that book often and for the life of me, can’t remember the photographer or I’d share (I probably need to go back to the library and see if I can find it again), but ever since seeing that book I thought it would be interesting to do something like that…whether it be observing the elderly in the nursing home (or in general), documenting the life of a cancer patient, or a child with the terminal illness….that type of journalism/photo essay work has always interested me and would most definitely push me out of my comfort zone.
ETA: The name of the book is called “People With Aids”

Qualifications/Training in Photography? Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Design and Photography

Can you describe your photography, in 2 words? Gosh, that’s super hard……maybe “colorful” and “pure”.

As you know, many of the photographers on ProPs are new to the ballgame, what advice would you give them to help put them on the road to success?  Take time to get to know your camera inside and out before you start a business, that and, once you have a business run it how YOU want to run it, don’t let other photographers and their “policies” affect the way you do business. It’s always good to have policies in place, but the great thing about owning your own business is that you get to bend the rules a bit when you see fit.  I sometimes see people complaining over and over about client issues (I have been guilty of it too, don’t get me wrong), but in the time it took to make a post and complain, the issue could have been resolved.  Our clients really are not the enemy…if I have something that will cost $5 (or $20) on my part and result in a satisfied client, why not just do it and send them on their way?  It’s not all about “proving a point”.

Speaking of favorites, would you share with us your 4 most favorite images you’ve shot in the last 6 months?  see attached

What’s your fave TV show?  OMG…just one???????  No way…couldn’t do it.  I’m a TV junky!!  I openly admit that I record everything and anything that might be of interest to me and watch it later when I’m up late working.  I pretty much love every reality show ever….The Bachelor, American Idol, America’s Next Top Model, So You Think You Can Dance, Dancing With The Stars, Real World, Girls Next Door, Gossip Girl, Nip/Tuck, Sex and the City, Rescue Me, Keeping up with the Kardashians, America’s Next Top Model, HGTV, 48 Hours Mystery, CSI….

What music are you listening to these days?  I will listen to anything that makes me feel something…whether it touches me emotionally or makes me wanna dance.  Some of my faves: Lady GaGa, Justin Timberlake, P!nk, Katy Perry, Jason Mraz, Tom Petty, Ashlee Simpson, Rhianna, Metro Station, Britney Spears, Jack Johnson, Michael Jackson, Aerosmith, Taylor Swift, Jewel, Thriving Ivory, Maroon 5, Nirvana, Poison, Bon Jovi, Carrie Underwood, Mariah Carey, Madonna, Faith Hill, Colby Calliat, Imogen Heap, Counting Crows, Dixie Chicks, Snoop Dogg, Gwen Stefani, Garth Brooks, Leona Lewis, Kelly Clarkson, Matchbox 20, Goo Goo Dolls, Miley Cyrus, Sugarland

Do you have spare time for yourself? If so, what do you like to do outside of Photography?? I think it’s essential to make time for yourself…especially when you are a mom AND running a business…and I don’t feel bad about that! :)  I really enjoy playing/watching sports…pretty much any kind, going out with girlfriends, shopping…I like to let loose and have a good time!
